Stanford GSB Interview
MBA Interview Questions

Learn more about Stanford MBA Interview Questions and get admitted to the school of your dreams.

The Stanford GSB Interview serves a complementary function to the other application requirements such as the three letters of recommendation/reference, two essays on different topics, two short-answer replies and comprehensive academic and professional records. However, take note that the interview itself will not preclude admission and/or non-admission to the program as other factors will be considered in the admissions process. For the graduate school, it is simply a source of supplemental information.

Things to Expect

When you have been given an interview invitation, of which you will be notified through phone or mail, you have a good chance of being admitted to the Stanford MBA program. You have to make use of the opportunity because very few are chosen by the Committee on Admissions to become competitive for admission into the graduate school.

You will be interviewed by Stanford alumni from all around the world. You can expect bigwigs in the Silicon Valley to be your interviewer! But there is no need to worry as the interviewer/alumni will be provided with specific interview guidelines vis--vis approaches, topics, and structure although he/she can also veer towards your unique interests and information. And they will be very friendly towards you, too! Thus, don't get the mistaken idea that just because he/she is friendly that you will be assured of admission.

The Stanford GSB Interview is slated to last 45 minutes for each applicant. However, interviews can last anywhere from 75 minutes to two hours depending on the interviewer's discretion. You will usually be asked questions by the alumni in the first 30-40 minutes, after which you can ask questions of the alumni. Just keep in mind that the goal of the interview is positive exchange of information and ideas between an alumni and possible graduate student.

The interview will focus on your past actions and decisions, which means that theoretical situations are bypassed. You will be asked questions on your accomplishments and failures, talents and skills, attitudes, and behaviors that will impact on your Stanford citizenship as well as on your life post-MBA. However, you still need to be prepared with answers about your plans for the future, your personal interests in things like books, and more important, behavioral situations. You need to think and think fast in most cases.

Things to Do

If you expect to make a favorable impression during the interview, there are certain things that you need to accomplish before the actual event itself. First, you have to physically and mentally prepare for an hour-long interview for indeed it can tax your body and mind. Get a good night's sleep, eat a healthy meal before the interview, and make your self presentable are de-rigueur in any interview. Second, you have to practice the answers to the possible questions that may be asked of you. There are books and other resources for this purpose although you must remember that the questions can change from one semester to the next. Third, you have to relax and just be yourself! Indeed, if you try to do otherwise, you will be discovered as a phony, a fake and that is one trait Stanford alumni are not keen on. With proper preparation, you will be able to pass the Stanford GSB Interview with flying colors.
